RIM announces Q1 earnings, says it's shipped 500,000 PlayBooks

RIM's just announced its Q1 earnings, including $4.9 billion in revenue and $695 million in profit. Perhaps even more anticipated than those numbers, however, are the ones involving actual devices, and the company's now revealed that it "shipped" around 500,000 BlackBerry PlayBooks during the quarter, while phone shipments totaled 13.2 million -- it didn't get specific about actual sales to consumers. Those earnings are on the low end of forecasts, and RIM says that the slowdown it saw in the first quarter will continue into Q2, which will apparently result in an unspecified number of layoffs. The makers claim it's suitable for ages six and up, and parents can monitor and limit web access via an online control panel. We're told that accessories will soon be on their way, including every parent's favorite: musical instruments. The full unveiling will be at the TIA toy fair this weekend. You say you're not the most talented musician in the world? No worries. The app's "Smart Guitar" will keep you in tune by suggesting chords and even "strumming" the strings for you.

When I think of what I paid for a junky 4-track recorder in high school, one that was a glorified cassette deck, and compare it to this thing I'm floored.

Apple announced the iPad 2 in a press event earlier today. You can catch our live coverage here.Apple announces GarageBand for iPad originally appeared on TUAW on Wed, 02 Mar 2011 14:10:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.Source | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Apple's mobile partner in China announces its own iPhone rival

The parent company of China Unicom, Apple's sole partner for carrying the iPhone in China, revealed plans on Monday to release its own mobile computing platform. Dubbed "Wophone", the platform will compete directly with Apple's iOS and Google's Android.

Last year, Apple partnered with China Unicom, the nation's second largest mobile carrier, to release the iPhone 4 in China. The exclusive availability of the iPhone on China Unicom's network helped the carrier compete with rivals China Mobile and China Telecom for new customers in China's nascent 3G wireless services market.

In a statement, China Unicom said it hopes Wophone will help the company and its manufacturing partners develop a broader variety of more affordable 3G devices and introduce them to market more quickly. The rapid introduction of new 3G devices could help woo new customers away from market-leading China Mobile who released its own mobile platform, "Ophone," in 2009.

China Mobile leads the wireless market in China with about 589 million total subscribers, but has only 22.6 million customers for its higher revenue 3G services. China Unicom said 15.5 million of its 170 million subscribers were on 3G at the end of January.

What's more, unlike some other low-cost Android tablets, Cherrypal says that the CherryPad will have full access to the Android Market, and it insists that it's "neither an iPad killer nor an iPad clone, it's a completely different product designed for a different market." Perhaps most surprising, however, is that the tablet is actually available right now through a partnership with online retailer Zecozi. Head on past the break for the full press release, along with a second, less polished image -- and hit up the source link below if you're ready to take the plunge.Continue reading Cherrypal announces $188 CherryPad America Android tabletCherrypal announces $188 CherryPad America Android tablet originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 07 Oct 2010 14:49:00 EDT. If you're keeping score, this one will be running Android 2.1, and will come in both seven and 10-inch varieties. While we don't know what kind of specs these slates will pack, we do know a few other details -- they'll have WiFi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.1, HDMI, a front-facing camera, and it'll come with a 32GB SD card. For now, we don't know when these will be available or how much they're going to cost, but we have a feeling that -- coming from a company with a product called the ROFL settop box -- it'll be a good time. We've requested a higher res image, we promise. Orbitsound announces T9 iPhone-friendly soundbar, we go ears on

You may remember seeing Orbitsound's T12 iPod dock / soundbar pop up in our summer buyer's guide. Today, the firm's just unveiled the latest in its product family: the Orbitsound T9. As you'll see, it's a very similar deal, but with an obvious difference -- its size. At 300mm (about 12") across, it's almost exactly half the length of its bigger brother (605mm) -- but not everything is a straight cut down the middle. Power-wise, this diminutive dock has a peak output of 140W RMS (split 80 on the subwoofer, 35 on the front speakers and 25 on the sides,) and carries the same in- and output options. That means optical, line (phono and 3.5mm) and an iDevice connector going in, and a composite video (for piping those movies on your iPhone to your telly) in the other direction. The included subwoofer helps the device perform the dual roles of iPod dock, and TV soundbar. It's launching in mid-July in UK retailers, and internationally online for £200 / $249. Luckily, we managed to get our hands on one of the first production models, and took it for a spin, so boogie on past the break for our impressions.Gallery: Orbitsound T9 hands-onContinue reading Orbitsound announces T9 iPhone-friendly soundbar, we go ears onOrbitsound announces T9 iPhone-friendly soundbar, we go ears on originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 13 Jun 2012 19:01:00 EDT.
